The African Cup of Nations 2019 will begin from the match between Egypt and Zimbabwe. Before the start of the tournament, it is worth checking who the experts are betting on as the new champion of the Dark Continent. In our article, we have familiarized with opinions of experts from around the world and we have also checked bookmakers’ courses on the national team that will reach for the AFCON 2019 trophy. To be as reliable as possible, we also talked to journalists who are close to African football. That’s why we decided to create a bilingual text.
Experts in Poland and in Europe are unanimous. Everyone is betting on the victory of Egypt and then on Senegal. The biggest star of the first team is Mohamed Salah and for second one – Sadio Mane. The „Pharaohs” are mentioned in the first place, because they are the host of the tournament. Two friends from the Liverpool pitch can face each other in the semi-final if their teams win their groups. Subsequently, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco are also mentioned. Interestingly, the defenders of the title – Cameroon – is being indicated after these teams.
Wychowany na piłce reprezentacyjnej, niezapomniany Mundial 1998. MŚ/ME/PNA > LM. Lubię Bundesligę i mecze w polskiej 1. i 2. lidze. Człowiek śmieszek, zdolny leń i mistrz ciętej riposty. Poza sportem obserwuję… esport. Marzę o czasowstrzymywaczu, żeby nadrobić zaległe książki i seriale.
Mali is a team that can be the biggest surprise. We remember well the young Malians from the World Cup U-20 in Poland. They showed there a lot of heart on the pitch, what pleased fans gathered in the stands. It might be the same case at AFCON, where „Eagles” can stir things up. They don’t have very difficult groups, and their real test will be the playoffs where they can face Cameroon or Ghana/Morocco, Ivory Coast or South Africa. They have many young and talented players in the squad who already showed themselves in European clubs. These youngsters will definitely want to present themselves well at African Cup of Nations.
Zdanie ekspertów z Afryki
Najbliżej tego turnieju są miejscowi dziennikarze. Dlatego też postanowiliśmy zadać kilka pytań czterem redaktorom z Afryki. Nasze pytania były następujące:
Kto wygra PNA 2019?
Kto zostanie najlepszym zawodnikiem turnieju?
Kto zostanie królem strzelców?
Którzy młodzi zawodnicy będą warci uwagi?
Która drużyna sprawi największą niespodziankę?
Kto zawiedzie najbardziej?
Co sądzisz o zmianie formatu i terminu rozgrywania PNA?
The local journalists are closest to this tournament. That is why we decided to ask a few questions to four of them. Our questions were as follows:
Who will win AFCON 2019?
Who will become MVP?
Who will become the top scorer?
On which of the young players should you pay attention to?
Which of the teams will be the biggest surprise?
Who will disappoint the most?
What do you think about changing the date of the tournament and changing the format?
1. Egipt – przewaga własnego terenu, dobry selekcjoner, świetna gra podczas eliminacji i oczywiście posiadają Mo Salaha. 2. Mohamed Salah. 3. Odion Ighalo. Nigeria ma łatwą grupę, a Ighalo będzie człowiekiem z zadaniem strzelania goli. Świetnie zaprezentował się podczas eliminacji i będzie chciał powtórzyć to w Egipcie.
4. Krepin Diatta z Senegalu.
Z 12 punktami w swojej grupie eliminacyjnej awansował do PNA kosztem Burkina Faso. Mauretańczycy będą grali bez strachu i będą mogli przejść do fazy pucharowej. 6. Kamerun.
Benjamin Hajji, founder of Maghrib Foot:
1. Egypt – Home advantage, good manager, great qualifying campaign and of course, Mo Salah. 2. Mohamed Salah. Coming off of another brilliant season with Liverpool and should be eager to lead his nation to the trophy – especially after last year’s disappointing World Cup. Best player on the continent, playing in his home country. Nothing more to say. 3. Odion Ighalo. Nigeria have a favorable group and Ighalo will be the man expected to score the goals. Had a great qualifying campaign and will want to replicate that in Egypt.
4. Krepin Diatta, Senegal. Watched him for the first time at the U-20 AFCON two years ago, where he ran the show and was included in the Team of the Tournament, as Senegal went all the way to the final. Diatta was later snapped up by Sarpsborg where I got to witness him live on several occasions. One year later he was sold to Club Brugge after receiving Young Player of the Season award in Norway. With his technical skills, clever runs and frightening acceleration, Diatta has the ability to make life miserable for any defense at the AFCON. Most comfortable on the wing, but can also play up top or behind the striker. Might not be a starter for a strong Senegal side, but a brilliant impact player coming off the bench.
5. Mauritania. I was very impressed by their U20’s, knocking out Morocco from AFCON qualifiers. Their senior team even more so, with 12 points from their group to advance to the final tournament at the expense of Burkina Faso. Will play with no fear and could sneak through to the knockout-stage. 6. Cameroon. Not impressed by them since appointment of Seedorf and Kluivert. Overrated squad and big pressure as reigning champions. 7. I preferred having it in January, but from club’s point of view it’s a good thing. Format will harm the quality of the competition but I like it.
2. Najlepszy zawodnik turnieju również będzie trudny do wytypowania. Jeśli gracze przedłużą swoją formę klubową w PNA, a mam tu na myśli m. in. Mohameda Salaha, Sadio Mané, Thomasa Parteya, Christiana Bassogoga, Nicolasa Pepe, Hakima Ziyecha i Wahbiego Khazriego, to będą mieć szansę na tą nagrodę.
Diadie Samassekou, Moussa Djenepo i Falaye Sacko z Mali, Samuel Owusu z Ghany, Percy Tau z RPA to inni młodzi gracze, którzy mają potencjał, aby zrobić różnicę w swoich drużynach. 5.
1. It will be difficult to predict the winner of the AFCON at the moment but there are favourites. My top most favourites is Egypt because of their history in the tournament as the most successful side and with a home advantage as they are the hosts. They have an experience squad with most of the players part of the team that were finalists in the last edition. Countries like Ghana, Morocco and Ivory Coast are sides I fancy to have chances of winning the ultimate per their recent performances. 2. Most valuable player of the tournament will be a tight one to determine but if players would replicate their club form in the tournament, the likes of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mané, Thomas Partey, Christian Bassogog, Nicolas Pepe, Hakim Ziyech, Wahbi Khazri amongst others stand the chance if their respective teams are to make into the last four or probably the finals. There could also be surprise winner.
3. The previous tournaments have shown that predicting a potential top scorer at the end of the this year’s own will be difficult. 4. Personally I think Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze is one of the youngsters to lighten up this tournament. Diadie Samassekou, Moussa Djenepo and Falaye Sacko of Mali, Samuel Owusu of Ghana, South Africa’s Percy Tau are other young players who have the potentials to make the difference for their teams. 5. Mali is one side I tip to surprise many people in this tournament. They have a very young team with lots of talents, strength, energy and future.
6. Senegal despite their awesome squad could disappoint at the tournament. They mostly flatter to deceive. If Morocco fails to get a semi-finals place, it will be a disappoinment. They possess a very good team with a strong squad. 7. Changing of the date of tournament seem to be positive because most stars would be able to represent their nations because their various have ended. Unlike in the January where some players would reject call ups due to the fact that they are committing themselves to club duties. The Expansion from 16 to 24 has also been a masterstroke. Some countries that were finding it difficult to qualify for the tournament had the opportunity to do so because of the change of format. Economically it’s also a perfect decision to change the format.
4. Piłkarzami wartymi uwagi na pewno będą Nicolas Pepe, Krepin Diatta, Andre Onana i Youcef Atal. 5. Niespodzianki będą mogły sprawić Uganda, Gwinea i Mauretania. 6. Algieria, bo nie ma zbalansowanej drużyny.
Mahmoud Gueye, senegalese journalist:
1. Sénégal, because we have a strong team with big players at any positions. 2. Sadio Mané. He has reached maturity, this year he is fit and is confident. 3. Mohamed Salah. He will play at home, he will have confident for scoring goals. 4. Players worth attention will certainly be Nicolas Pepe, Krepin Diatta, Andre Onana, Youcef Atal. 5. Surprises will be able to make Uganda Guinea and Mauritania. 6. Algerie, not balanced team.
7. I think it’s a good thing this change. The AFCON in June will allow players to have more visibility and transfer opportunities as the clubs were often reluctant to buy African players who contested the AFCON in January. The transition to 24 teams is also a good thing, it will give small nations the chance to have the opportunity to compete in this competition and to have all the big African teams.
1. To trudne pytanie. Nigerii, ponieważ wygrali trzy razy i mają najbardziej zrównoważony zespół w turnieju.
2. Odion Ighalo. Strzelił mnóstwo bramek w eliminacjach. Jeśli Nigeria ma wygrać PNA, to musi strzelać gole. MVP może też trafić do Mo Sallaha i Obi Mikela. 3. Odion Ighalo. 4. Pomocnik Egiptu Trezeguet. Format? Nie widzę z tym problemu. Im więcej tym lepiej.
Temisan Okomi, sport journalist and presenter in Classic FM 97.3:
1. This is a tough question. My eye will be on five countries. Egypt because they are hosting and have won it the most times – seven. But the last time they won it was nine years ago so it doesn’t count. They do have Mo Sallah though and he might be the difference. Nigeria because they’ve won it three times and have the most balanced team in the tournament. In Wilfred Ndidi, Nigeria has, arguably, the best defensive midfielder on the continent. Ivory Coast have won it twice, but they might be the least favourite of my five. They are not as fearsome as they were when they had Didier Drogba & Yaya Toure. They are still a formidable side though. Ghana are five-time winners but the last one came in 1982. They did finish as runners up four years ago though. They are due a win. Senegal just because of Sadio Mane. But they have, arguably, the best defender in Africa – Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
2. Odion Ighalo. He scored a ton of goals in the qualifiers. If Nigeria are going to win it, he has to score goals. Usual suspects will be Mo Sallah & Mikel Obi. 3. Odion Ighalo. 4. Egypt midfielder Trezeguet. Nigeria has a lot of youngsters but I like the look of Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze. Maxwell Cornet of Ivory Coast. 5. Morroco. They have got a great coach in Herve Renard. 6. Ghana might disappoint us. 7. Changing the date ensures that the African players based in Europe do not have to be put in the difficult situation of having to choose between club and country but it feels like Africa is been colonized again though. The European summer months is Africa’s rainy season and it might affect the quality of football. The format? I see no problem with it. The more, the merrier.

A lot of people curious about the new addition to Morocco's #AFCON2019 squad, 19-year-old Achraf Dari. Here's what I wrote about the centre-back last year. Eight months later, he's now won the league and potentially the Champions League as a regular in Wydad's defense.

Egypt can score, Zimbabwe can defend. Expect a tight opener tonight then. Egypt to win it because they are hosting, have always beaten Zimbabwe & they have Mo Sallah, but I don't expect it to be a goal fest. But keep an eye on Knowledge Musona. He can shock Egypt.
2-1.
